AI Extracts Answers, Not Rankings

This week’s issue comes from a realization I wish someone had told me earlier in my AI SEO journey:

Google ranks pages.

AI retrieves and extracts them.

Most people think LLMs “rank” content like Google.

They don’t.
​
AI search happens in two entirely different steps and understanding them is the foundation of AI SEO in 2026.

Today, I break down the two steps every AI SEO beginner misunderstands:

Retrieval → Which pages AI decides to look at

Extraction → Which sentences AI decides to use

Once you understand this, AI visibility finally makes sense.


1. Retrieval: How AI Decides Which Pages to Fetch

Retrieval is not ranking.

Retrieval is AI asking:

“Which 3–5 pages should I examine for this answer?”

Here’s what actually happens:

  • ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini call Bing Search API
  • Bing returns a short list of URLs
  • The LLM fetches only those pages
  • Then it decides if your content is worth reading

A few important notes:

  • Ranking matters less than indexing
  • Topic clarity matters more than keyword targeting
  • Semantic relevance decides retrieval more than PageRank
  • Backlinks influence retrieval only indirectly

If Bing can’t discover you → AI will never retrieve you.

Retrieval is the gateway to AI visibility.


2. Extraction: How AI Chooses Which Sentences to Use

Once a page is retrieved, the LLM extracts the most “answer-ready” blocks:

  • Definitions
  • Short summaries
  • Feature lists
  • Clear fact statements
  • Strong entity-dense sections

It ignores long paragraphs.

It ignores marketing fluff.

It ignores vague positioning.

Here’s a SaaS example:

Search “What is workflow automation?” inside ChatGPT or Perplexity.

You’ll notice it usually extracts:

not the longer explanations on the same page.

Why?

Because extraction rewards clarity, anchors, and structure — not length.

This is why “good content” doesn’t always get cited.

But extractable content does.


3. How Retrieval and Extraction Change Your SEO Strategy

This is the shift most SEOs and founders haven’t internalized yet:

Retrieval = influenced by indexing, authority, clarity

Extraction = influenced by structure, definitions, entities

So:

  • Backlinks help retrieval, not extraction
  • Structure helps extraction, not ranking
  • AI SEO = improving extractability
  • GEO = optimizing answer units, not keywords

If your SaaS content is retrieval-friendly and extraction-friendly,
AI starts mentioning you far more consistently.


4. What I’m Testing Next (AI SEO Lab)

Here’s my next experiment:

Which SaaS definition format gets extracted most by ChatGPT and Perplexity?

I’ll test:

  • Short one-line definitions
  • Multi-line definitions
  • Feature-first blocks
  • Problem-first blocks
  • “X is a…” classic structures

Then I’ll track which one AI pulls most often.
